COLD WEATHER -- FLU SEASON
During the cold weather months, it is important to be aware that some illnesses and medications
can place a person at risk because they affect the way the body handles cold temperatures. With
the cold weather comes the the challenges of keeping healthy and warm during the “seasonal flu season,” which in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May.
Influenza, or commonly referred to as "flu," is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. This serious disease can cause mild to severe illness that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. During this time, flu viruses are circulating in the population.
The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

WHEN TO GET FLU VACCINATIONS
An annual seasonal flu vaccine (either the flu shot or the nasal-spray flu vaccine) is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community. It is recommended that you get your flu vaccination at the beginning of the flu season (in September and October) or as soon as it is available in your area.
The flu vaccine is the best protection against the flu this season. If you get the flu vaccine, you are 60% less likely to need treatment for the flu by a healthcare provider. Getting the vaccine has been shown to offer substantial other benefits including reducing:
